Celebrating Migration Journeys at the Citizen Chen Comedy Show
A few weeks ago, for the first time, PCHC-MoM had the privilege of co-sponsoring a comedy show where comedian Scarlet Chen shared her migration and citizenship journeys through clever humour and bouts of laughter.
We were invited into an hour of sensational comedy of migration stories from Beijing to Gabriola Island that left you wanting more! Her first words on stage that evening were “I am fresh off the boat” a few seconds later, “BC ferries!”
Scarlet told her truth on the trials of citizenship, immigration, and belonging with an Asian flare and finesse, allowing us glimpses into her world of cultural norms and expectations. With comedic grace, Scarlet walked us through her migration and settlement journeys and left us enraptured with her wit, charm and captivating smile - keep on walking Citizen Chen!
A special shout out to our two comedian guest speakers, Molly Chen and Nancy Ho who participated in the talkback session and who both exploded with rare, impactful, and brilliant Asian-packed humour! Please check out these amazing comedians and their upcoming shows.
Also, deep gratitude to Sophea Heang who was an amazing moderator and passionately led Scarlet, Nancy, and Molly through interesting questions and reflections, keep on building community Sophea!
What truly made the talkbalk session memorable was that four women of Asian descent had the mic’s in their hands that evening where they spoke their truths out loud, wittingly and unapologetically. Thank you so much Scarlet, Sophea, Molly, and Nancy for igniting the embers of light and laughter in the Founder’s Lounge and leaving us all wanting more. Power to Asian women!
We also want to highlight the delicious Cambodian and Filipino culinary treats that were served that evening and heartfelt thank you’s to Pan'ya Neou at Angkor Harvest and Christina Tamayo at Kulinarya Filipino Eatery. Please support these community-minded businesses.
THANK YOU’S to Up In the Air Theatre and The Cultch as the sponsor and host of the event and to everyone who attended and volunteered at the Citizen Chen Show, we see you and appreciate you all!
