A Hogan’s Alley Walking Tour With Lama Mugabo

  • The Blue House (Corner of Main & Union) (map)

Hogan’s Alley was a historic neighbourhood in Vancouver’s East End that existed from 1919 to 1972. It was home to Black residents and also a diverse, working-class community where many racialized and marginalized people were able to live when other parts of the city excluded them.

The neighbourhood was systematically neglected by the City of Vancouver. Basic services such as garbage collection were inconsistent, and homeowners were subjected to redlining policies that denied them access to bank loans to repair or improve their homes. When the area inevitably fell into disrepair, the city labeled it a “blight” and used urban renewal as justification to displace the residents and erase the community.

In 2015, when the City announced plans to remove the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts, Black residents and allies showed up to remind Vancouverites that Hogan’s Alley had been a Black neighbourhood, and that its story had not ended. To the mayor’s credit, he directed senior city staff to work with the Hogan’s Alley Working Group to develop a revitalization plan. That plan was approved in 2018, and in 2022, the City of Vancouver signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hogan’s Alley Society for a 99-year lease on the land.

Today, we are excited not only to share the hidden history of Hogan’s Alley, but also to welcome the return of a Black presence to the area. This restoration matters deeply, for our children, our families, and future generations, because it affirms belonging, memory, and the right to build community in the city we call home.
