November 18, 2023

On November 18, PCHC-MoM held its Annual General Meeting at the Sun Wah Centre in Chinatown. After the meeting, dim sum was catered by Kam Wai and attendees shared heritage artifacts.

August 20, 2023

On August 20, in partnership with the Italian Cultural Centre Museum and the David Lam Centre, PCHC-MoM presented an English and a Cantonese workshop for the MVOH (Multi Voices One Heart) 2023 Trans-Pacific Cantonese Opera Festival.

July 4, 2023

From July 5-6, the Hearts of Freedom exhibition visited Government House in Victoria to close off its tour around BC. Guided tours of the building and exhibit were provided to guests.


June 21, 2023

On June 21, 2023, the Hearts of Freedom exhibition opened at the Victoria Public Library, staying there for two weeks before moving to Government House.


June 11, 2023

On June 11, 2023, the opening reception of “Hearts of Freedom in Surrey” was organized jointly by PCHC-Museum of Migration Society and St Matthew’s Parish. The event featured performances by parishioners of Vietnamese heritage. Following the reception, guests watched a screening of “Passage to Freedom”.



June 4, 2023

On June 4, 2023, PCHC-MoM, AlumniUBC, UBC Transcending Boundaries, and UBC First Nations House of Learning co-hosted a screening of "Passage to Freedom", followed by an intercultural panel of speakers discussing forced migration. Panelists included Elder Larry Grant, Dr. Margaret Moss, Vivian Rygnestad, and Putsata Reang.



May 13, 2023

The arrival of the Hearts of Freedom exhibition to UBC Robson Square was celebrated with a free screening of the exhibition’s accompanying film, Passage to Freedom. A panel discussion after the documentary showcased UBC faculty and alumni who can speak on topics to do with global migration studies, including UBC’s interdisciplinary Asian Canadian & Asian Migration Studies.



May 13 - May 31, 2023

The Hearts of Freedom in BC exhibit was later moved to UBC Robson Square, where it will remain until May 31, 2023. The next stop will be on UBC’s main campus at the Robert H Lee Alumni Centre.



May 1, 2023

"Hearts of Freedom in BC” Opening Reception to mark Asian Heritage Month was hosted at Three Bentall Centre. Catering and festive performances were arranged to showcase the talents in the Cambodian, Laotian and Vietnamese communities in Metro Vancouver. Guided tours of the national travelling museum exhibition were also conducted by two of the principal researchers at the beginning of the evening.



May 1 - May 12, 2023

The Hearts of Freedom in BC exhibit was later hosted at Three Bentall Centre from May 1-12, 2023.



April 29, 2023

April 29, 2023 marked the official BC Premiere: Passage to Freedom (English) and Q&A. The film screening was followed by a question-and-answer session with Dr. Stephanie Phetsamay Stobbe and Mr. Michael Molloy – two of the principal researchers of the oral history project that leads to the production of a national travelling exhibit and this documentary film.



April 28, 2023

On April 28, we held an "Open Doors, Open Hearts" Fireside Chat at SFU Harbour Centre. Panelists spoke from their professional and lived experiences relating to past and current refugee resettlement efforts to illuminate the struggles, pitfalls, successes and concerns, as we collectively work towards building a nation to which all citizens feel they can truly belong. Panelists included Mr. Michael Molloy, Dr. Stephanie Phetsamay Stobbe, and Mr. Loren Balisky. The event was moderated by Winnie L Cheung.



April 26, 2023

PCHC Film Night: A Smorgasboard of Refugee Stories was hosted at SFU Harbour Centre. Screenings include extracts from award-winning filmmaker Cheuk Kwan’s epic Chinese Restaurants (Episode 1), a short Heritage Minute on “Boat People”, personal migration stories shared and captured by PCHC-Museum of Migration Society, and an intro to the “Hearts of Freedom” project, as well as a fascinating account by an immigration official Michael Molloy of his involvement & reflections on this recent and previously undocumented chapter in Canadian history. The final program will be a sneak preview of the French version of Passage to Freedom (2023).

To mark the first day of the Hearts of Freedom in BC exhibit at SFU, a sneak preview of the new film Passage to Freedom (2023) was exclusively made available to our volunteers, partners and the Hearts of Freedom storytellers.



April 24 - April 30, 2023

The first stop for the Hearts of Freedom in BC exhibition was hosted at SFU Harbour Centre - Vancouver Campus. Hearts of Freedom – Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees is a pop-up exhibition that focuses on the personal histories of refugees from Southeast Asia who came to Canada between 1975 and 1985, and the stories of people who assisted them.

We met at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden on April 19, 2023 for our volunteer training & social. The session featured cultural teachings by our friends at SEACHS, as well as team-bonding activities for volunteers.

Our second virtual information session for Hearts of Freedom in BC took place April 4, 2023. This was the final virtual session before the in-person training & social.

January 6, 2023

PCHC-MoM member and new director Vivian Wakabayashi Rygnestad was featured as a panelist at Finding Forgiveness. The panel preceded a preview of the play Forgiveness, the powerful story of the harrowing experiences of Mark Sakamoto’s family during World War II.



2022

October 29, 2022

PCHC-MoM members & friends gathered in Victoria to learn about the dispossession of Japanese Canadians as part of their forced displacement and internment in the 1940s. Vivian Wakabayashi Rygnestad led us on a tour of the “Broken Promises” exhibit at the Royal BC Museum. Later in the day, Michael Abe led us through Esquimalt Gorge Park and the Japanese Garden.



September 10, 2022

Hosted at local restaurant CHAU Veggie Express, Pacific Canada Story Fest continued in the form of PCHC Story Feast: The CHAU Veggie Express Story & More! Community members heard from storytellers Maria Huynh, owner of CHAU, and Vietnamese-Canadian artist Chrystal Phan. Participants enjoyed an afternoon of storytelling, learning, and delicious food.



July 24-25, 2022

Our inaugural Pacific Canada Story Fest continued as a study tour covering historic sites in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. The tour included visits to Paldi, the Hillcrest Chinese Cemetery, the Mountain View Cemetery, the Chinese Canadian Museum’s exhibit at Fan Tan Alley, & a storytelling circle at the Chinese Community Services Centre of Victoria.



June 18, 2022

The first Pacific Canada Story Fest kicked off on June 18, 2022. Culturally diverse storytellers, ranging from age 18 to over 80 coming from different parts of the Lower Mainland and beyond, gathered in person at the iconic Italian Cultural Centre in East Vancouver to share their personal or newly documented stories.

In collaboration with the Cross Cultural Walking Tours, Knowledge Network, and PCHC-MoM, a screening of “BC: An Untold History” took place on May 29. The Lunch + Learn event was hosted at the Hon Hsing Athletic Club, with opening remarks by PCHC-MoM President Wendy Yip.

Presented as part of “From Far and Wide: Pacific Canada Stories” & “Pacific Canada StoryFest 2022”, we again offer our workshop series aimed at translating family lore into digital format. We were proud to partner with UBC INSTRCC and the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC to put on these workshops. The final workshop took place in-person at the Italian Cultural Centre, prior to Pacific Canada Story Fest on June 18.



February 26, 2022

In celebration of Black History month, PCHC-MoM volunteers and supporters got together on February 26, 2022, to share an authentic and delicious home-cooked Nigerian luncheon. PCHC-MoM members then enjoyed an exclusive guided tour at the Museum of Anthropology, UBC Vancouver, of a special exhibition called: Sankofa: African Routes, Canadian Roots. “Sankofa” is a Ghanaian Akan phrase meaning “go back and get it” and has come to symbolize, for many of African descent, the ethos of embracing one’s heritage while moving towards the future.



January 2022

In response to the uptick of anti-Asian hate and racism since COVID, and the advocacy by people of Indigenous/Black heritage and other racialized communities, the provincial government will introduce legislation next year on race-based data collection.  PCHC was invited along with many community organizations to help collect community input that will inform how the Government gathers and uses race-based data in the future. PCHC hosted a series of anti-racism focus groups with members of the community.




2021

October 23, 2021

Banquet of Stories 2021 was held at the ISSofBC on October 23rd, 2021. The event featured refugee speakers and explored the themes of community/personal resilience and sustainable food practices. The event had two separate in-person sessions, as well as a virtual component where individuals watched the event live-streamed.

PCHC President Wendy Yip moderated a British Columbia: An Untold History post-screening panel dialogue (between PCHC Honorary Advisor Elder Larry Grant and Director/Producer/Writer Kevin Eastwood that was streamed live on Oct. 6, 2021.

To commemorate Orange Shirt Day (September 30th), recently recognized as “The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation”, PCHC-MoM and UBC Transcending Boundaries and First Nations House of Learning co-hosted a webinar, Challenging Perspectives on Wellbeing — The Impact of Disconnectedness, featuring Indigenous perspectives on wellbeing. Confirmed panelists included Elder Larry Grant (Adjunct Prof., First Nations and Endangered Languages and Elder-in-Residence at UBC; of Musqueam and Chinese heritage),Dr. Margaret Moss (Assoc. Prof., UBC Nursing, and Director, First Nations House of Learning at UBC; of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nations of North Dakota and the Canadian Sioux of Saskatchewan); and Ms. Coreen Paul (Director of Health Programs, Musqueam Nation). Ms. Marny Point (Coordinator of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program and PhD candidate at UBC Education; of Musqueam Nation) moderated the panel.

PCHC Director Sharn Sandhra hosted a free guided tour of the Sikh Heritage Museum, offered exclusively to PCHC members. Sandhra is also a co-curator of the museum.

PCHC co-hosted the launch of the new video and teaching edition of Challenging Racist “British Columbia”: 150 Years and Counting on Tuesday, July 20 2021. All the authors, producer Jessica MacVicar, and educators Carmen Rodriguez and Karine Ng presented the release of the new video and teaching edition of Challenging Racist “British Columbia”: 150 Years and Counting. Together we can challenge the continuing impacts of racism and genocide in this province. PCHC-MoM Society is a proud supporter of this important resource. We are honoured to call Sharanjit Kaur Sandhra a PCHC Director and to have Denise Fong & John Price as dear friends of the PCHC-MoM Society.



May 21-22, 2021

PCHC was delighted to co-present MVOH 2021 from May 21st - 22nd, 2021. Encouraged by the response from fans around the world, an even richer program – 25 songs by 13 professionals and 12 seasoned amateurs from both sides of the Pacific – was offered in front of a limited audience in a theatre in Hong Kong, from where it was live-streamed.

To commemorate the start of Asian Heritage Month, PCHC hosted a virtual event, “Ancestors in our Attics.” Community curator Catherine Clement explored how stories of migration have been rediscovered and brought back to life through objects found, yet forgotten, in our homes. Through her decade-long, ground-breaking work collecting the hidden photographs of Vancouver Chinatown’s first and most prolific photographer, Yucho Chow – to her current project locating surviving C.I. documents used to monitor, control and intimidate early Chinese in Canada – Catherine will show how each piece helps reveal a rich story.

PCHC-MoM participates in Doors Open Richmond 2018. PCHC-MoM collaborates with Richmond Museum to present their “Our Journeys Here” exhibit celebrating the different cultures in Canada. PCHC-MoM partners with Museum Bento to display the “Powder and Paint” box on Cantonese opera and the early Chinese immigrant experience in Vancouver. Individuals volunteer their time to share objects they brought with them on their journeys to Canada, and tell their migration stories. A lively performance was done on the Chinese hammered dulcimer.

May 5, 2018 

PCHC-MoM and Sarah Ling hosts a screening of the film "All Our Father's Relations" and workshop for educators and facilitators at the UBC Learning Exchange. The film follows the Grants siblings journey to China to rediscover their father's roots and his relationship with their Musqueam mother. The film was a new resource for teachers to incorporate Indigenous content into their subjects at school.

PCHC-MoM hosts its inaugural "From Far and Wide" Gala at the River Rock Theatre, Richmond. Over 200 people of different ages and cultural backgrounds attend, bringing to life PCHC-MoM's values of intercultural, intergenerational and collaborative efforts. Photos of the event can be seen here.

PCHC-MoM co-presents Paint It Red at the 21st Vancouver Asian Film Festival, a documentary about the community fight to save seniors from homelessness and eviction when a real estate developer proposes a luxury condo in the heart of Vancouver's Chinatown. Paint It Red is a VAFF Best Canadian Feature Award nominee.

October 13-21, 2017

The first joint project between PCHC-MoM and the Italian Cultural Centre is installed in the lobby of Queen Elizabeth Theatre at Vancouver Opera's request during their run of Puccini's Turandot. PCHC-MoM also invites Vancouver's oldest Cantonese opera association, Qing Yun Music Society, to demonstrate traditional make-up and music on opening and closing nights.

PCHC-MoM supports UBC ACAM in organizing a Day of Learning to mark the 75th anniversary of Japanese Canadian internment and the 5th anniversary of the UBC Honorary Degree Ceremony for the 76 Japanese Canadian students expelled from UBC in 1942.

PCHC-MoM hosts Vancouver's Block Party at Strathcona Community Centre to celebrate Block by Block/Quartier par Quartier, a national participatory project about newcomers in neighbourhoods, spearheaded by Toronto Ward Museum. The Block Party is held concurrently with Block Parties in two historically significant neighbourhoods: St. John's Ward in Toronto and Côte-des-Neiges in Montreal.

PCHC-MoM co-presents the benefit performance "Multi-Voices, One Heart: Celebrating Canada 150 in Cantonese Opera" at the Michael J. Fox Theatre, with artists from Hong Kong, Vancouver and Toronto. Over 300 tickets are purchased by sponsors for Chinese seniors to attend. A repeat performance is presented at Ryerson Theatre, Toronto, on July 9.

Together with academic and community partners from Vancouver, Toronto and Hong Kong, PCHC-MoM presents "Town and Gown Summer Spotlight on Cantonese Opera Past and Present." Events include talks by academics and practitioners, dim sum and opera in the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

In collaboration with the Italian Cultural Centre, PCHC-MoM present the joint exhibition "Common Voices: The Cultural Legacy of Cantonese and Italian Opera in Vancouver." Through pictures, cultural items and oral interviews, opera is shown to be a means of maintaining cultural identity in times of transition and upheaval.

PCHC-MoM Advisor Larry Grant and Director Howard Grant. All Our Father's Relations won "Best Canadian Feature" at the VAFF awards.

With the support from PCHC-MoM and UBC, the Canadian Indonesian Diaspora Society (CIDS) received a federal government grant to record the migration and family stories of Indonesian-Canadian elders. CIDS coordinators of the project brought the community together to present a progress report. PCHC enjoyed connecting with the Indonesian-Canadian community, eating snacks and drinking coffee, and playing a few games.

PCHC-MoM in partnership with explorASIAN and the City of Vancouver's Mountain View Cemetery leads a free walking tour of the cemetery, where Chinese, Japanese, and Jewish people were buried at the farthest extremity of the cemetery. PCHC volunteers told stories of families buried in the cemetery.

Jean Kares curated the exhibition of multicultural textiles at the Chinese Cultural Museum, including Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, and Mexican textiles. The exhibition included an informational symposium with talks by Jean Kares (on Chinese textiles), Angela Clarke (on Italian textiles), Liza Wajong (on Indonesian textiles), and Trish Graham (on African textiles).

PCHC-MoM celebrates the second annual Of Rice and Roots event (a celebration of Southeast Asian food and culture) hosted by the UBC Institute of Asian Research and UBC Centre of Southeast Asia Research. Indonesian, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, and Singaporean cuisine were offered.

The PCHC-MoM Society supports the launch of First Families, First Stories project with the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society. Year one of VAHMS put the spotlight on the Filipino-Canadian community, recognizing pioneers who set the foundation for today’s modern communities.

PCHC-MoM Society joins the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC's Musqueam Community Tour, led by the Musqueam/Chinese Grant family members Howard and Larry Grant. Howard Grant is also a Director on the PCHC-MoM Society's Board.

The PCHC-MoM Society provides volunteers for the Ing Clan Association's Centennial Exhibition, so that English, Mandarin, and Cantonese-speaking people could come view ancient artifacts of Chinese-Canadian immigrants.

PCHC-MoM attends the Centennial Dinner of the Komagata Maru. In 1914, British Indian subjects were denied entry to Canada onboard a Japanese ship called the Komagata Maru. 2014 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the event.

PCHC-MoM co-organizes the Mini Film Festival with VAHMS as a part of explorAsian 2012 at New Westminster's 10th Annual Multicultural Festival. The Mini Film Festival was comprised of a series of film screenings called "Our Stories", featuring a series of award-winning documentaries which told the stories of the communities in British Columbia. It included the migration stories of the Chinese pioneers by Jordan Paterson of SF  as well as Ali Kazimi’s inquiry into the largely ignored history of Canada's exclusion of the South Asians by an immigration policy called the Continuous Journey Regulation of 1908.
