A Message to acknowledge the tragedy at the 2025 Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver, BC
The board of directors, volunteers and members of the of PCHC Museum of Migration express their deep sympathy and sorrow to the Filipino community & families that were affected by tragedy that struck at the end of an otherwise successful Lapu Lapu festival on April 26, 2025.
Lapu-Lapu's victory is celebrated in the Philippines as a symbol of nation's resistance to colonization and the bravery of its early leaders. The city of Lapu-Lapu on Mactan Island in the central Philippines is named in honour of the chieftain and serves as living tribute to his legacy.
The government of British Columbia officially recognized April 27 as Lapu-Lapu Day in 2023, acknowledging the cultural contributions of the Filipino Canadian community, one of the largest immigrant groups in the province.
